I Love Hockey Players...
I really do. They tend to be good guys coming off the farms from Minnesota or some far off place in an unheard of part of Canada.
However, they are as dumb as fuck.
Case in point: Zach Werenski of the Columbus Blue Jackets...
This is Zach after Sunday’s game against the Penguins when he took a puck to the face. His season is now over because of a “facial fracture.” I’m amazed that’s all he got after I saw that puck hitting his face.
But you’re saying: this is a dangerous game. They know the risks and hell, isn’t this playoff hockey? Injuries are going to happen, but you just pick yourself up and get back into the game, right?
And that is what Werenski did. He got stitched up and played the rest of regulation. Mind you he didn’t play in overtime because he couldn’t see out of that eye anymore, but he tried. FYI, Werenski posted this picture on his Twitter account with the caption “Playoff hockey…” while he was being treated in the locker room by the team doc. The impression I got was that he was proud of this and saw it as a badge of honor.
Heck, during the commentary of the game, it was said that his teammates were ribbing him for wearing a full-face mask. Even the commentators were teasing him about it too. Why? Because real hockey players don’t do that, dontcha know?
Idiots.
You are making a shit ton of money. Some of you are making millions of dollars a year. In Werenski’s case, his salary was $925,000 not including regular season bonuses and the money he would have made during the playoffs. Why the fuck would you do anything to jeopardize that, especially since hockey players tend to have shorter careers than other athletes?
The worst part? Werenski is only 19 years old! His career could have ended right here.
But players don’t want to be forced to wear a full mask. They argue “we can’t see out of them.” I call BS on that as I played hockey for years with a full cage mask and had no problems seeing. Then again, you have idiots like Don Cherry who degrade players from even wearing visors. Cherry once said in 2004 “Most of the guys who wear them are Europeans and French guys” and this was said in a very derogatory way as the guy hates non-Canadians. Then again, this is coming from a man who dresses like he stole the curtain from my great aunt’s house in the 1970s:
I really only watch Coach's Corner these days just to see how hideous his suit is that night. I stopped listening to him years ago.
The point is this: I get the guy-code that is involved in hockey. It is a tough sport. I know as I played it for years. I also get that you want to prove how manly you are. But are you really ready to risk losing an eye or that nice steady paycheck you have right now? If not, then you truly are idiots.
